MEMBER OF THE COC ATHLETES’ COMMISSION
MEMBER DESCRIPTION AND EXPECTATIONS
Purpose: Athletes’ Commission members will represent Athletes and act as their voice within the COC
Major responsibilities:
- Review issues of interest to Athletes
- Provide a forum in which Athletes may share and develop information or ideas as they relate to Athletes
- Pursue the development and maintenance of systems which will define and secure Athletes’ rights
- Serve as a source of Athletes’ opinion and advice to the COC Executive Committee and Board of Directors with regard to current or contemplated policies and programs
- Actively represent the interests and concerns of Athletes and initiate projects that align with the COC and COC AC objectives.
* Members of the COC Athletes’ Commission share these responsibilities while acting in the interest of the COC. Each member is expected to make recommendations based on his or her experience and vantage point in the athlete community.
** Each Member is elected as an individual, not as a representative of their National Sport Federation
Length of term: The term for these members shall be four(4) years from the time of election
Meetings and time commitment:
The job of a COC Athletes’ Commission member requires the following time commitment:
- Regular attendance at meetings and conference calls (typically 2-3 face-to-face meetings and 6- 8 virtual meetings per year that last about 1.5-2 hours each);
- Sufficient advance preparation and active participation at meetings and conference calls;
- Active participation in ensuring performance in the interests of the members;
- Willingness to spend at least 5 hours per month on Commission affairs in addition to attending meetings and conference calls.
Expectations of members:
- Attend and participate in meetings and conference calls on a regular basis;
- Commission members shall make best efforts to communicate, at least once annually, about the activities of the Commission to their respective Affiliates.
- Commission members may be asked to actively contribute to an Athlete Leader area within the COC. The Commission members shall make best efforts to participate in all required meetings asked of them.
- Commission members assigned an Athlete Leader area are required to attend a minimum of 75% of all meetings and respond to communication in a timely fashion, or may be asked to resign.
- Participate on a standing committee of the COC Session, and serve on ad-hoc committees as necessary;
- Be alert to athlete community concerns that can be addressed by the COC mission, objectives, and programs;
- Help communicate and promote the COC mission and programs to the athlete community; and
- Understand the policies and procedures of the COC.
